Custom Monitor Tags

Tags are short labels you attach to monitors to organize, filter, and bulk-manage them. They're private to your company, freely created, color-coded for fast scanning, and auto-clean up when no monitor uses them β€” the same model Plex uses for collections.

Available to all paid plans, no per-tier limits.

How tags work

A tag is just a name (up to 40 characters) plus an automatically-assigned color. Tags live in a per-company dictionary, so "Production" in your company is unrelated to "Production" in another tenant. A monitor can wear any number of tags, and a tag can be worn by any number of monitors.

When you remove the last assignment of a tag β€” that is, when no monitor in your company has it anymore β€” the tag itself disappears from the dictionary. No housekeeping to do.

Adding tags to a monitor

  1. Open any monitor's Edit modal (pencil icon on the row).
  2. Find the Tags section in the right column.
  3. Start typing in the "Type a tag name…" field.
  4. Pick a suggestion to attach an existing tag, or click + Create "name" (or press Enter) to mint a new tag on the spot.
  5. Repeat for as many tags as you want, then click Save Monitor.

Each chip in the picker has an Γ— to remove it before saving. Backspace in the empty input also removes the rightmost chip β€” fast for keyboard editing.

Tag chips on the monitor list

Each tagged monitor displays its chips inline on the row, on the same line as the "Alerts To:" text. The chip uses the tag's color so a glance across the inventory tells you which monitors are production, which are customer-critical, which are scratch, and so on.

Recoloring a tag

Tags pick a color automatically the first time they're created (deterministic from the name, so "Production" always gets the same color). To change it:

  1. Click any chip on the monitor list β€” a small color picker appears.
  2. Click a swatch.
  3. Every chip across every monitor row with that tag updates immediately. No reload needed.

The change persists to the database; the next page load shows the new color.

Filtering by tag

The Tags dropdown at the left of the filter bar opens a checklist of every tag in your company:

  • Single click an option β†’ replace the selection with just that one tag.
  • Ctrl/Cmd + click β†’ toggle a tag in or out of the selection without losing the others.
  • Shift + click β†’ select a range from the last clicked tag to this one.
  • Letter keys β†’ jump the highlight to the next tag whose name starts with that letter.
  • Up/Down arrows + Space β†’ keyboard navigation.

The trigger button shows the current state: "none", a single tag name, or "multiple" when more than one is picked. Click Apply to re-filter the inventory. The match logic is AND β€” a monitor must wear every selected tag to appear in the results.

Selected tags also show as colored pills in the active-filters row above the table. Clicking the Γ— on a pill unchecks it in the dropdown locally; click Apply again to re-run the filter.

Bulk add or remove a tag

Need to attach "production" to every monitor matching the current filter view, or strip "test" from everything in *.staging? Use the ✏ Bulk button at the top right of the monitor table (next to Pause):

  1. Filter the inventory down to the monitor set you want to act on.
  2. Click ✏ Bulk.
  3. In the Tags section, type or pick a tag.
  4. Click + Add to all to attach the tag, or βˆ’ Remove from all to detach it.
  5. The page reloads with the change applied.

Bulk add is idempotent β€” monitors that already had the tag are left alone. Bulk remove is the same β€” monitors that didn't have the tag are unaffected. If removing the tag from this set drops its total assignments across the company to zero, the tag is auto-deleted from the dictionary.

The same modal also has an Alert Recipients section that lets you add or remove a recipient across the same filtered set in one click β€” see Alerts & Notifications for the group / stack alerting pattern that pairs tags with bulk recipient changes.

No separate management page

You won't find a "Manage Tags" page anywhere. There isn't one by design β€” tags exist exactly as long as some monitor wears them. To delete a tag entirely, remove it from every monitor and it cleans itself up. To rename, just edit any monitor: remove the old tag, add a new one with the desired name.

Frequently asked

Can two monitors share a tag with different colors?
No β€” the color is a property of the tag, not the assignment. Changing the color via one chip updates every chip showing that tag.

Is there a limit on how many tags I can create?
No per-plan limit. Tags are cheap; create as many as your team needs.

Can MSPs see their clients' tags?
Yes, when switched into a client account, the MSP sees and edits that client's tags just like the client would. Tags don't cross tenant boundaries when switching back.

What happens to tags if I delete a monitor?
The assignment is dropped automatically (foreign-key cascade). If the deleted monitor was the last one wearing a tag, the tag itself is auto-removed too.
